In this continuation of the Matthew series, Tim Miller looks again at Jesus’ words, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” This sermon focuses on how Jesus teaches and models mercy by valuing people according to their worth before God, not according to outward status, usefulness, or even sinful conduct. From Jesus’ compassion toward the crowds, His welcome of children and “little ones,” His mercy toward the blind, and His call to love enemies, we see that true disciples are called to reflect the mercy of their heavenly Father. The message also reminds us that mercy does not mean ignoring sin. God’s kindness, patience, and restraint are meant to lead sinners to repentance, and the cross is the ultimate display of mercy toward those who were helpless, sinful, and hostile toward Him. Because God first loved us, His people are called to love, forgive, and show mercy to others rather than waiting for others to obey Jesus first.
